Springtime is auction season, and this year things were hotter than ever in the market for early 1960s exotica. Last weekend, Bonhams sold a one-off 1960 Bertone DB4 GT Jet for $4.9 million at a special event by the AM Works Service based at the old factory in Newport Pagnell. This weekend, a 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Coupe Aerodinamico is on the block the RM Auctions Lake Cuomo event.

The rush of car buying in Pebble Beach in August also reached a fever pitch this year, but these two cars from earlier in the season are the real stand-outs of 2013, in these eyes.

Both cars are exceptional examples of the rising prices for the best 2+2 luxury models, which have traditionally sagged in value compared with their two-seat coupe and spyder variants. These two cars are the absolute best, coming out of their manufacturer restoration programs with all numbers and certifications needed to earn serious cash.

The Ferrari SuperAmerica Aerodinamico stands out due to its beauty versus the somewhat awkward lines of the DB4 GT Bertone Jet. Itself a styling update for the square-grilled 1959 Superamerica, it features glass-covered headlamps and the oval slatted grille from Ferrari’s best racing cars of the era. Feast your eyes on these beauties, each a time-capsule of the era.
